Survivors’ Anthem Series #10: “Stay” - Little Big Town

Updated: Feb 23

A Survivor Anthem Shared By My Community

One of the most beautiful parts of healing is realizing we don’t have to do it alone.

And one of the most beautiful parts of this Survivors’ Anthem Series has been seeing people connect to it, and how many survivors carry songs in their hearts the same way I do.

This post is different in the best way, because this Survivor Anthem was recommended to me by a follower of my page.

The song is:

“Stay” — Little Big Town

I had never heard this song before.

And I have to say, it is stunning. It is haunting. It is honest in a way that feels like it goes straight to the heart without asking permission.

It brought a tear to my eye the first time I heard it, because it spoke words my heart has felt.

And after listening, I reached out to the follower who suggested it and asked if they’d be willing to share their thoughts for this series, because this series is about survivor voices, and those voices deserve to be honored.

They said yes.

And what they shared is so powerful, I wanted to include their words directly.

A Survivor Anthem From a Follower

This follower described the song in a way that honestly captures its emotional power so perfectly. Here is what they shared:

“‘Stay’ by Little Big Town, which also came out in 2002, brings me to tears every time I hear it. The pain of feeling like I’m not enough for someone I love so much was heartbreaking. I could relate. And the way she gains strength throughout the song until she is standing on her own, ready to walk away because she learned her strength and her worth - it inspires me every time. It reminds me to keep going, reminds me that even though it doesn’t feel like it, I have worth.”

I want to pause here and say: thank you to this follower for trusting me with that truth and allowing me to share it.

Because what they described is something so many survivors recognize:

That heartbreaking feeling of trying to be enough.

Trying to earn love.

Trying to hold onto someone while slowly losing yourself.

And then, the shift.

The moment when the story changes.

When the song turns from pleading… to power.

When she stops begging to be chosen, and starts choosing herself.

That is a survivor story too.

Why “Stay” Hit Me So Hard

When I listened to “Stay,” I could feel the ache in it immediately.

Not just sadness, but the deeper kind of sadness that comes from emotional survival:

  • wanting someone to see your worth

  • wanting love to feel safe

  • wanting to be enough

  • wanting to be chosen

The song carries the weight of what it feels like to fight for love… while slowly realizing love should never require you to beg for your value.

And that’s why it’s such a powerful anthem.

Because even though it’s painful, it also contains something survivors desperately need:

a moment of truth.

A moment of reclaiming.

A moment of self-worth.

Songs Like This Tell Survivors the Truth: You Have Worth

What I love about what my follower shared is that it points directly to the heart of survivor healing:

That moment when you realize…

You don’t have to keep proving your worth.

You don’t have to beg to be chosen.

You don’t have to stay where love hurts.

And also:

Even if it doesn’t feel like it right now…

you have worth.

That line alone is enough to make this song a survivor anthem.

Because trauma can make you feel unworthy.

Abuse can make you feel disposable.

Survival can make you feel like you exist only to endure.

But healing says:

No.

You are worthy of love that doesn’t break you.

A Thank You to Little Big Town - And to the Survivor Who Shared This Song

To Little Big Town, thank you for creating something so raw and beautiful. “Stay” is a reminder of how powerful music can be when it tells the truth.

And to the follower who shared this anthem with me:

Thank you.

Thank you for adding your voice to this series. And a new song to my own Anthem List.

Thank you for reminding survivors that worth is real, even when pain tries to convince us otherwise.

Thank you for being brave enough to share your perspective with others who may need it more than they know.

This is what survivors do for each other.

We help each other keep going.

What’s Next in the Survivors’ Anthem Series

Each Survivors’ Anthem post will include:

  • a featured song

  • why it mattered to me (or my community)

  • what it helped us survive or process

  • and a reel where I sing a short part of it while honoring the artist behind it featured on my authors social media pages.

If you’re reading this and you’re in a season where you feel like you’re not enough…

Please hear this:

You do not have to earn your worth.

You already have it.

And you are not alone.
