Finding the Courage to Speak My Truth

Some survivor anthems remind us of healing.

Some remind us of hope.

And some take us back to the exact moment we began searching for our own voice.

This is Survivors’ Anthem # 49:

The moment I hear this song, I'm transported back to my teenage bedroom, door closed, music turned up as loud as my stereo would allow. Trying to drown out the world.

Trying to sort through emotions I didn't yet have words for.

Trying to find the courage to speak my truth.

Looking back, I realize I wasn't just listening to a song.

I was searching for myself.

Growing Up Feeling Different

One of the hardest parts of surviving childhood abuse is feeling like your life doesn't look like anyone else's. While my classmates worried about homework, sports, dances, or who they liked, I was carrying secrets no child should have to carry.

I was being abused by my stepfather. I couldn't explain why I was anxious. Why I always seemed to be watching everything around me. Why I felt older than everyone else.

Why I struggled to fit in.

I didn't know how to define who I was because so much of my identity had been shaped by surviving.

That kind of loneliness is difficult to put into words.

Music Became My Voice

When I couldn't say what I was feeling…I sang it. Sometimes at the top of my lungs. Sometimes through tears. Sometimes because it was safer to let someone else's lyrics carry my emotions than to speak my own.

"Come Clean" became one of those songs.

Every time I played it, it felt like I was releasing something that had been trapped inside me. The fear. The confusion. The longing to finally stop hiding.

Music became the place where I could be honest before I was ready to be honest out loud.

Wanting to Tell the Truth

Survivors often spend years carrying stories they don't know how to tell.

Not because they don't want to. But because fear is powerful.

Fear of not being believed.

Fear of hurting the people we love.

Fear of what might happen if we finally speak.

As a teenager, I desperately wanted someone to know what was happening. I wanted someone to understand why I was struggling. But finding the words felt impossible.

Looking back, I think songs like this helped prepare me. They reminded me that one day...

I would tell my story.

Coming Clean

Today, the title of this song means something very different to me. It no longer represents fear.

It represents freedom.

Coming clean wasn't about shame. It was about refusing to let shame win. It was choosing honesty over silence.

Light over secrecy.

Healing over hiding.

Writing Because of Jane was, in many ways, my own version of coming clean.

Not because I owed anyone my story.

But because I deserved to finally live without carrying it alone.

A Thank You

To Hilary Duff, thank you for creating music that gave a teenager somewhere safe to place emotions she couldn't yet explain.

You may never know how many people found pieces of themselves in your songs, but I was one of them.

Thank you for helping me find my voice long before I was brave enough to use it.

What This Anthem Means to Me

For me, this anthem represents truth. The moment when silence begins to lose its power. The moment when survivors realize their voices matter. The moment when healing begins with one honest sentence.

Every survivor deserves that moment.

Whether it's spoken aloud...

Written on paper...

Shared with a therapist...

Or whispered for the very first time.

Because every truth deserves to be heard.

What's Next in the Survivors' Anthem Series

Every song in this series represents another chapter of healing.

  • Some songs gave me strength.

  • Some gave me hope.

  • Some reminded me I wasn't alone.

This one gave me something I desperately needed as a teenager.

A glimpse of my own voice.

And eventually...The courage to use it.
