Survivors’ Anthem Series # 50: “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera
The Music That Helped Us Heal
Fifty anthems.
Fifty songs that have carried stories of survival, pain, courage, anger, healing, and hope.
And when I thought about which song deserved the milestone of becoming Survivors’ Anthem # 50, there was one that felt absolutely right.
“Fighter” by Christina Aguilera.
This wasn't simply a song I liked when I was younger. I needed this song.
I played it over and over when I needed strength. I turned it up when I needed to feel powerful. I sang along when I didn't have the words, or sometimes even the courage, to say what I was feeling myself.
Before I fully understood the survivor I would become, Christina Aguilera helped me feel like a fighter.
When Someone Else's Words Become Your Strength
There is something extraordinary about music when you're surviving trauma.
Sometimes you don't have the language yet to explain what is happening to you.
Sometimes you're scared to speak.
Sometimes you've been made to feel small for so long that you've started believing you actually are.
And then a song comes along. Suddenly, someone is singing with the anger you couldn't express. The confidence you didn't feel yet. The strength you desperately wanted.
That's what “Fighter” became for me.
I could put that song on and, for those few minutes, I wasn't powerless.
I wasn't the frightened girl trying to understand why the people who were supposed to protect her could also hurt her.
I was strong.
I was angry.
I was determined.
I was a fighter.
I Listened Until I Believed It
There were times when I didn't feel strong at all.
That's something I think gets lost when we talk about survivors.
We see someone years later advocating, speaking, writing, helping others, and we call them strong.
But we don't always see the years when they didn't believe that about themselves.
Strength wasn't something I woke up with one morning.
I had to build it.
Sometimes one tiny piece at a time.
And sometimes music helped me do that.
I listened to songs like “Fighter” until their strength became something I could borrow.
And eventually, I didn't have to borrow it anymore.
I started finding it inside myself.
From Fighter to Survivor
When I look back at the younger version of me listening to this song, I wish I could tell her what was coming.
Someday, you are going to tell your story.
Someday, you're going to stop carrying someone else's shame.
Someday, you're going to use your voice.
Someday, you're going to write a book.
Someday, you're going to advocate for other survivors.
Someday, the things meant to silence you will become part of the reason you speak so loudly.
And someday, you won't just be trying to convince yourself that you're a fighter.
You'll know you are one.
Knowing Christina Is a Survivor Makes It Mean Even More
There is another reason this anthem carries so much meaning for me.
Christina Aguilera has spoken publicly about growing up around domestic violence and abuse in her family.
Knowing that gives her music another layer for me.
There was lived experience behind that voice.
There was survival behind that strength.
As a young person listening, I didn't fully understand how much that connection would eventually mean to me.
Now I do.
There is incredible power in survivors using their voices.
One survivor speaks, sings, writes, or creates something from their experience—and somewhere, another survivor hears it and thinks:
Maybe I can survive this too.
That's exactly what music has done for me.
What Doesn't Break Us Can Become Part of Our Power
I don't believe trauma happens for a reason.
I don't believe we need to be grateful for the things that hurt us.
I would never thank abuse for making me strong.
The credit for my strength belongs to me.
It belongs to the people who loved me.
The people who protected me.
The people who believed me.
The music that carried me.
And every single time I chose to keep going.
What happened to me did not make me a fighter.
I became a fighter because I refused to let what happened to me win.
There is a difference.
And it's an important one.
A Thank You to Christina Aguilera
Christina,
Thank you.
Thank you for giving a younger version of me words when she didn't have her own.
Thank you for creating music that let me scream, sing, cry, and release emotions I didn't know what to do with.
Thank you for showing strength without pretending pain never existed.
And thank you for using your own voice as a survivor.
You may never know how many people stood in bedrooms, cars, bathrooms, or in front of mirrors singing your words because they needed to believe they were stronger than what was happening to them.
I was one of them.
Your music helped me feel like a fighter long before I realized just how fiercely I could fight.
Survivors’ Anthem # 50
Reaching 50 Survivors’ Anthems feels incredibly special to me.
When I started this series, I wanted to explore something I've known almost my entire life:
Music can help us survive.
These songs have been there during childhood trauma.
During heartbreak.
During fear.
During anger.
During moments when I needed courage.
During moments when I finally began healing.
And now, through this series, songs that once helped me feel less alone are connecting me with other survivors and their anthems too.
That's exactly what I hoped this series could become.
A soundtrack of resilience.
A reminder that sometimes another person's words can carry us until we're ready to find our own.
And I can't imagine a better song for #50 than “Fighter.”
Because the little girl who once needed to blast this song just to feel powerful grew up.
She found her voice.
She told her story.
She survived.
She thrived.
And somewhere along the way...
she realized she had become the fighter she was singing about all along.
