Sometimes Another Survivor Introduces Us to the Song We Didn't Know We Needed

One of the most beautiful things about the Survivors’ Anthem Series is that it isn't just my playlist anymore.

It has become ours.

Survivors have begun sharing the songs that carried them through their darkest moments, helped them leave, helped them grieve, or reminded them of the strength they were beginning to find again.

And Survivors’ Anthem # 51 comes from one of those survivors.

They recently got out of a relationship involving domestic violence, and this is a song that has become deeply healing for them:

They heard it for the first time live at an Evanescence concert.

When they shared the song with me and explained what it meant to them, I immediately went to listen.

And my first thought was:

How have I never heard this before?! I've loved Amy Lee and Evanescence forever.

Her voice has always had this incredible ability to carry pain, anger, grief, strength, and beauty at the same time.

But somehow, this song had escaped me. Not anymore. Because “Forever Without You” has officially found its way onto my personal Survivors’ Anthem list too.

When Leaving Doesn't Mean the Feelings Immediately Leave

There is a misconception about leaving an abusive relationship that I think we need to talk about more.

People sometimes imagine leaving as the ending. You walk out. You're safe. It's over.

But survivors know it can be far more complicated than that. Leaving can be the beginning of an entirely new kind of healing.

You may have escaped the relationship physically while your mind and heart are still trying to understand everything that happened.

There can be:

  • Grief.

  • Anger.

  • Relief.

  • Fear.

  • Confusion.

Love for the person you thought they were.

Grief for the future you thought you were going to have.

And the enormous task of learning who you are without the relationship.

Healing after domestic violence isn't always a straight line toward happiness.

Sometimes healing begins with learning how to imagine a life without them.

A Song Found at Exactly the Right Time

What makes this survivor's story especially powerful to me is where they first heard the song.

At an Evanescence concert. There they were, newly navigating life after domestic violence, surrounded by music, and suddenly hearing a song they had never heard before.

Sometimes music finds us like that. We don't go looking for the anthem. The anthem finds us.

A lyric lands differently because of what we've lived through. A voice reaches a place we've been unable to reach ourselves. And suddenly, a song becomes attached to a chapter of our lives forever.

For this survivor, “Forever Without You” became part of that healing chapter. And I am incredibly honored that they trusted me enough to share it.

Learning to Imagine “Without You”

There can be tremendous power in those two words:

Without you.

For someone leaving abuse, they can initially sound terrifying.

Who am I without this person?

What does my life look like now?

Can I actually do this?

Will I be okay?

Trauma and coercive control can make someone feel as though they cannot survive independently. That's part of what makes leaving so difficult. But eventually, without you can begin to mean something entirely different.

Without the fear. Without walking on eggshells. Without wondering which version of someone you're going to encounter. Without having your worth determined by another person. Without being controlled. Without being hurt. Without losing pieces of yourself just to keep the peace.

And slowly, those words can begin to sound less like loss... and more like freedom.

Healing Doesn't Erase What Happened

A survivor doesn't need to pretend the relationship never mattered in order to heal from it.

You can grieve what you hoped it would become. You can miss pieces of it. You can feel angry. You can feel relieved.

You can feel several contradictory emotions in the same hour.

Healing doesn't require you to rewrite your feelings into something neat and uncomplicated. It requires giving yourself permission to feel them.

And sometimes a song can provide a safe place for those emotions to exist.

That's why music can become such an important part of survival and recovery.

It doesn't demand an explanation.

It simply meets us where we are.

To the Survivor Who Shared This Anthem

Thank you.

Thank you for trusting this series with a piece of your story.

Thank you for introducing me to a song that I somehow missed despite loving Evanescence for so many years.

And most importantly, thank you for reminding other survivors that there can be a life on the other side of abuse.

Your story is yours to tell, or not tell, in whatever way feels right for you.

But your song can still become another thread in this growing web of resilience.

Someone reading this may listen to “Forever Without You” because you shared it.

And maybe they'll hear something they desperately needed too.

That's the incredible ripple effect of survivors sharing their anthems.

Amy Lee and Evanescence

I've loved Amy Lee and Evanescence for as long as I can remember.

There is something unmistakable about Amy's voice. She doesn't simply sing emotion, she makes you feel it.

Evanescence has been part of my own soundtrack through incredibly difficult chapters of my life, which makes discovering another song that resonates with survival especially meaningful.

And yes...Seeing Evanescence live is still absolutely on my bucket list.

After hearing that this survivor discovered their anthem at an Evanescence concert, I may want to experience them live even more.

Amy Lee and Evanescence, thank you for creating music that gives people somewhere to put emotions that can otherwise feel impossible to carry.

Your music continues to find survivors exactly where they are.

What This Anthem Means to Me

This anthem represents more than one song.

It represents what this series is becoming.

When I began sharing the music that helped me survive, I hoped other survivors would recognize pieces of themselves in these songs.

Now survivors are giving songs back to me.

They're introducing me to their music.

Their strength.

Their healing.

Their stories.

And that's incredibly powerful.

Survivors’ Anthem # 51 belongs to another survivor.

But because they were brave enough to share it, it has become part of my playlist too.

That's how resilience spreads.

One voice.

One story.

One song at a time.

🛡️ Survivor Support & Safety Awareness

For anyone currently experiencing domestic violence, leaving can be one of the most dangerous and complicated periods of an abusive relationship. Safety should always come before pressure to leave on someone else's timeline.

Part of my advocacy is helping survivors know that support and resources exist while also respecting that every survivor's circumstances are different.

I'm also proud to collaborate with Hootie Personal Safety Alarms.
