Choosing to Keep Going
Some survivor anthems help us heal.
Some help us find our voice.
And some remind us that even when life is difficult, we can keep moving forward.
This is Survivors’ Anthem #43:
“The Show Must Go On” by Queen
This song is one of the most powerful songs ever recorded, and it comes from a band that has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.
I grew up listening to Queen.
They were one of my mom's favorite bands.
And over time, they became one of mine too.
Freddie Mercury: A Survivor
When people think of Freddie Mercury, they often think of one of the greatest performers in music history. And they are absolutely right.
But I also think of someone who faced incredible adversity. Someone who refused to stop creating.
Someone who continued to perform, sing, and inspire people even while facing tremendous personal challenges. There is something deeply inspiring about that.
"The Show Must Go On" wasn't just a song.
It became a statement.
A declaration of resilience.
A reminder that even when life hurts, there is still a reason to keep moving forward.
What This Song Means to Survivors
One of the reasons this song resonates so strongly with survivors is because healing often requires us to keep going even when we feel exhausted.
There are days when trauma feels heavy.
Days when grief resurfaces.
Days when memories return.
Days when anxiety or depression make every step feel harder.
And yet...we keep going.
Not because it's easy.
Not because we're fearless.
But because somewhere inside us there is still hope.
That is what this song reminds me of every time I hear it.
Strength Doesn't Mean You're Not Hurting
One of the biggest misconceptions about survivors is that strength means we aren't struggling.
The truth is often the opposite. Strength isn't the absence of pain. Strength is choosing to continue despite it.
"The Show Must Go On" captures that perfectly.
The song doesn't pretend everything is fine. It acknowledges hardship. It acknowledges suffering. And then it reminds us to keep moving forward anyway.
A Lifelong Love of Queen
Queen has been part of the soundtrack of my life since childhood.
From road trips and family memories to karaoke nights and moments of healing, their music has always been there.
Freddie Mercury's voice was unlike anyone else's.
Brian May's guitar work is legendary.
Roger Taylor and John Deacon helped create songs that continue to inspire generations.
Together they created something timeless.
Music that continues to help people through some of the hardest moments of their lives.
A Dream of Mine
One day, I hope to see Queen perform live. Not only because I love their music. But because it would be a chance to celebrate the legacy Freddie Mercury left behind.
His voice may be gone, but his impact remains.
His music continues to inspire millions.
And his message of perseverance continues to reach people who need it.
Including survivors.
