Closing the Door and Choosing Yourself
Some survivor anthems are quiet.
Some are reflective.
And some demand to be sung at the top of your lungs.
This is Survivors’ Anthem # 48:
If there is one artist who knows how to pour every ounce of emotion into a song, it's Celine Dion.
She doesn't simply sing. She tells a story. Every note. Every breath. Every lyric. You believe every single word because of the passion she brings to it.
This has always been one of my favorite karaoke songs.
It's incredibly difficult to sing, but that's part of what I love about it.
When I perform it, I'm not just singing. I'm feeling every emotion the song carries.
The Lyrics That Stayed With Me
There is one section of this song that has always stopped me in my tracks:
"But you were history with the slamming of the door…"
"And I made myself so strong again somehow…"
"And I never wasted any of my time on you since then."
Those lyrics feel like freedom.
Like the moment someone finally closes the chapter on the person who hurt them.
As survivors, there comes a point where we realize something important:
The abuse may always be part of our story.
But it doesn't get to write the ending.
Becoming Strong Again
One of the most difficult parts of healing is believing you'll ever feel like yourself again.
After trauma, it can feel as though someone has stolen pieces of you.
Your confidence.
Your trust.
Your joy.
Your voice.
Healing isn't about pretending those losses never happened.
It's about slowly discovering that they can be rebuilt.
Sometimes stronger than before.
That line
"I made myself so strong again somehow."
captures that journey perfectly.
Because survivors don't magically wake up healed.
We rebuild ourselves one day at a time.
One boundary at a time.
One choice at a time.
One act of courage at a time.
Closing the Door
Healing often requires closing doors. Not because we hate the people who hurt us. But because we finally love ourselves enough to stop letting them keep hurting us.
Closing the door doesn't erase the memories. It doesn't erase the pain. But it creates space.
Space for peace.
Space for healthier relationships.
Space for joy.
Space for the future.
Every survivor deserves that chance.

Celine Dion has one of the most extraordinary voices in music history. There is a reason her songs continue to resonate across generations.
She has an incredible ability to make listeners feel seen. To make heartbreak feel understood. To make resilience sound beautiful.
That is a gift.
