When Your Mind Won’t Let You Rest
Some survivor anthems are about strength.
Some are about survival.
And some describe a struggle that happens entirely inside your own mind.
This is Survivors’ Anthem # 44:
“Stuck in My Head” by BLÜ EYES
And if I'm being honest, this song feels like it was written directly from the inside of my brain.
Because I spend a lot of time stuck in my head. Second-guessing. Overthinking. Questioning myself. Replaying conversations. Wondering if I said the wrong thing. Wondering if I did the wrong thing. Wondering if I am the problem.
And while I know these patterns didn't start with me, they have been part of my life for a very long time.
A Learned Survival Skill
One of the things trauma teaches survivors is how to constantly evaluate their environment.
As children or adults living in unsafe situations, overthinking can become a survival skill.
You learn to analyze every mood. Every facial expression. Every shift in tone. Every possible outcome. Because your brain is trying to protect you.
The problem is that those survival skills don't always leave when the danger does.
Years later, your mind is still scanning. Still evaluating. Still preparing for threats that may no longer be there.
And that can be exhausting.
Living in Your Head
Sometimes I wish I could just turn my brain off for a while. Not forever. Just long enough to rest.
Long enough to stop analyzing every possibility.
Long enough to stop carrying the weight of every "what if."
But trauma doesn't always work that way.
Sometimes your mind becomes so used to protecting you that it struggles to let go of the job.
And that constant mental activity can make it feel like you're trapped inside your own thoughts.
That's why this song resonates so deeply with me.
It captures the feeling of being unable to escape your own mind.
The Dreams That Followed Me
For me, that experience didn't just happen while I was awake. It happened while I slept too.
I've always had incredibly vivid dreams. The kind that feel real. The kind that stay with you long after you wake up.
And for a long time, many of those dreams were connected to trauma.
I would find myself reliving pieces of my past over and over again.
Different settings. Different details. But the same emotions. The same fear. The same helplessness.
And one of the hardest parts was feeling like I couldn't control it.
I could wake up.
But I couldn't stop it from coming back.
When Trauma Replays Itself
Many survivors understand this feeling. Trauma doesn't always stay in the past. Sometimes it reappears through memories. Sometimes through flashbacks. Sometimes through anxiety. And sometimes through dreams.
It's as though the brain keeps trying to process something it never had the opportunity to fully understand.
That doesn't mean we're broken.
It means we're human.
And healing is often far more complicated than people realize.
A Song That Makes Me Feel Seen
What I appreciate most about "Stuck in My Head" is that it captures a feeling many people struggle to explain.
The constant noise.
The overthinking.
The self-doubt.
The inability to simply shut it off.
When a song can put words to an experience you've carried for years, it creates something powerful.
It reminds you that you're not alone.
And sometimes that's exactly what we need.
A Thank You
To BLÜ EYES, thank you for creating a song that speaks so honestly about the experience of living inside an overactive mind.
Thank you for helping people feel understood.
And thank you for reminding listeners that they are not alone in these struggles.
What This Anthem Means to Me
For me, this anthem represents awareness.
Understanding where my overthinking comes from.
Understanding that many of my fears began as survival skills.
Understanding that healing doesn't mean never struggling.
It means learning how to respond to those struggles with compassion.
And perhaps most importantly, learning that I am more than the thoughts that get stuck in my head.
What’s Next in the Survivors’ Anthem Series
Every song in this series represents a different chapter of healing.
Some songs helped me survive.
Some helped me find my voice.
Some helped me understand my trauma.
This anthem represents something equally important:
Learning to navigate the thoughts that won't let go.
As the series continues, I'll keep sharing the songs that shaped my journey through survival, healing, and hope.
Because sometimes the hardest battles aren't the ones happening around us.
They're the ones happening inside our own minds.
