The Power Anthem I Blasted Before I Knew Just How Much I Would Survive

Some songs become part of your story before you fully understand why.

The moment I think about “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child, I can picture myself as a teenager in my bedroom. Music turned up, door closed. And me absolutely blasting this song. There was something about it that made me feel powerful. At an age when so much of my life felt outside of my control, music gave me a place where I could feel strong.

And “Survivor” wasn't a song you quietly listened to. You belted it. You felt it. You let yourself believe it.

Years later, I realize just how fitting it is that this song became one of my teenage power anthems. Because that girl singing in her bedroom had no idea just how much she would survive.

This is Survivors Anthem 54, "Survivor" by Destiny’s Child.

Before I Called Myself a Survivor

When I was a teenager, I didn't have all the language I have today.

I knew what had happened to me. I knew I had been abused by my stepfather. I knew I carried fear, anger, confusion, and pain that many of the teenagers around me didn't seem to understand.

But I was still trying to figure out who I was outside of all of it. I certainly couldn't see the woman I would eventually become. An author. An advocate. Someone willing to speak openly about what happened.

Someone creating a space where other survivors could share their stories and their songs.

Back then, I was simply trying to make it through. But every time I blasted “Survivor,” I got to feel something I desperately needed:

Powerful.

Sometimes We Borrow Confidence From Music

That's one of the reasons I've created this entire series.

Music has an incredible ability to lend us emotions we haven't learned how to access yet. When I didn't feel confident, I could sing along with someone who did. When I didn't feel strong, I could turn up a song that made me feel unstoppable for a few minutes. When I couldn't express my anger, music could express it for me.

And when I wasn't ready to fully understand myself as a survivor, I could still sing a song called “Survivor.”

Maybe part of me already knew.

Survival Isn't Always Dramatic

When people hear the word survivor, they may imagine one enormous moment of overcoming something. But survival often happens quietly. It's getting out of bed after a night of flashbacks. It's going to school while carrying a secret nobody knows. It's laughing with friends even though part of your mind is somewhere else. It's discovering little pieces of yourself that trauma tried to take away.

It's learning boundaries.

It's asking for help.

It's saying no.

It's eventually realizing that the things someone did to you don't get to determine who you become.

Sometimes survival is simply choosing, again and again:

I'm still here.

From My Teenage Bedroom to Today

I wish I could somehow let that teenage girl see me now.

I'd let her see the books.

I'd show her Because of Jane.

I'd tell her about Because of Maddie: The Girl Who Said, “ENOUGH!”

I'd show her The Jane Project and the survivors who have trusted me with pieces of their own stories.

I'd show her this series, more than fifty songs representing survival, healing, courage, grief, anger, hope, and freedom.

And then I'd remind her of all those afternoons and nights when she blasted “Survivor” in her bedroom.

You were singing about yourself.

You just didn't know it yet.

More Than Surviving

There's another piece of this that matters deeply to me.

For a long time, surviving felt like the goal.

And surviving is enormous.

There are chapters when simply making it through the day deserves to be celebrated.

But eventually I wanted more than survival.

I wanted to live. I wanted joy. Love. Friendship. Travel. Music. Writing. Advocacy. Karaoke. Laughter.

A life that belonged to me instead of one defined entirely by what happened to me.

That's where thriving begins.

Not because the past disappears.

Not because healing becomes perfect.

But because trauma is no longer allowed to occupy every room in your life.

Thank You, Destiny’s Child

Thank you for giving teenage me a power anthem.

Thank you for creating a song I could blast behind a closed bedroom door when I needed to feel stronger than I felt.

There is something incredible about looking back at the music we loved when we were younger and realizing that sometimes those songs understood pieces of us before we understood ourselves.

Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, you gave an entire generation a song that made us stand a little taller.

For this survivor, it became something even more.

It became a declaration I would eventually grow into.

What “Survivor” Means to Me Today

Today, I don't need a song to convince me I'm a survivor.

I know I am.

I survived childhood abuse.

I survived the years of trying to understand what happened.

I survived the complicated emotions that came with remembering, healing, and finding my voice.

But survival isn't the end of my story.

I'm writing what comes after.

I'm speaking.

I'm advocating.

I'm loving.

I'm laughing.

I'm singing.

I'm still healing.

And I'm living.

The teenager who once blasted this song because it made her feel powerful eventually discovered that the power had been inside her all along.

She just needed time to find it.
