Witnessing Strength and Survival
Some survivor anthems are about our own story.
Some are about finding our voice.
And some are about the people who showed us what strength looks like… before we even had the words for it.
This is Survivors’ Anthem # 34:
“She’s Not Crying Anymore” - by Billy Ray Cyrus
And for me, this one takes me back to childhood—and to my mom.
Car Rides and Cassette Tapes
When I was younger, car rides with my mom always sounded the same.
She had three cassette tapes that were constantly in rotation:
The Charlie Daniels Band.
A 60s women’s Part Lights Cassette.
And Some Gave All by Billy Ray Cyrus.
Those songs became part of my childhood soundtrack.
And even then… I was listening more closely than anyone probably realized.
A Song I Understood Too Young
“She’s Not Crying Anymore” was one of those songs that stayed with me.
Even as a child, I understood it.
Maybe not in the way an adult would, but in a way that came from watching, from feeling, from knowing something wasn’t right.
I saw what my mom went through.
I saw the pain and the hell.
The strength.
The way she kept going anyway.
And this song felt like a reflection of her journey.
Watching a Survivor Rise
My mom is one of the strongest people I know.
She went through things no one should have to go through.
And yet… She came out on the other side not just surviving, but protecting, loving, and fighting for her children.
She became fierce.
She became strong.
She became everything we needed.
This song captured that transformation.
From pain… to healing… to strength.
The Meaning That Stayed With Me
There’s a line in the song that has always stayed with me:
“She’s not crying anymore… she’s not lonely any longer…”
Those words meant something to me even when I was young.
Because I wanted that for her.
I wanted her to be free from the pain I could see.
And now, when I listen to it, it feels like a reminder of everything she overcame.
A reminder that healing is possible.
A reminder that strength can grow out of even the hardest experiences.
A Thank You
To Billy Ray Cyrus, thank you for creating a song that speaks to resilience, healing, and moving forward.
And to my mom—thank you for your strength.
Thank you for your love.
Thank you for fighting through everything you did and still showing up for us.
I am so proud to call you my mom.
What This Anthem Means to Me
For me, this anthem represents something deeply personal:
Witnessing survival.
Witnessing someone go through pain and come out stronger.
It represents the quiet moments where a child sees more than they should… but also learns what strength looks like.
Because sometimes the people who shape us the most…are the ones who show us how to keep going.
What’s Next in the Survivors’ Anthem Series
Every song in this series represents a different stage of healing.
Some songs helped me survive.
Some helped me process anger and grief.
Some helped me reclaim my voice.
This anthem represents something just as powerful:
The strength we witness in others.
As the series continues, I’ll keep sharing the songs that shaped my journey through survival, healing, and strength.
Because sometimes the most powerful lessons we learn…are the ones we watch unfold in someone we love.
