Friendship, Strength, and the Justice We Dream Of
Some survivor anthems make us cry.
Some make us reflect.
And some make us smile while speaking to something much deeper.
This is Survivors’ Anthem # 45:
“Goodbye Earl” by The Chicks
I've been listening to The Chicks since I was a teenager.
Growing up in Vermont, country music was everywhere. Most of the radio stations that came in clearly were country stations, and their songs became part of the soundtrack of my childhood and adolescence.
Among them was a song that many people know for its dark humor and unforgettable story:
"Goodbye Earl."
And while people often remember it as a clever country song with a memorable chorus, for me it represented something else.
It represented justice.
The Justice Survivors Dream About
As a child living with abuse, there were many times I wished someone would step in and stop it.
Many times I wished someone would see what was happening. Many times I wished there would be consequences. Children don't always have the power to protect themselves. They depend on the adults around them to keep them safe.
When that safety is missing, it's natural to dream about rescue. To dream about justice. To dream about a world where bad things don't happen to good people.
Looking back, I realize that's part of why this song resonated with me. Not because of the specific story itself. But because it was a story where someone finally stood up to the abuser.
And as a child, that felt powerful.
The Power of Friendship
Another reason this song stayed with me is because at its heart, it's a story about friendship.
About someone refusing to abandon the person they love. About standing beside someone when life becomes unbearable. And survivors understand the importance of that kind of support.
Healing rarely happens alone. Sometimes the people who save us aren't superheroes. They're friends, teachers, neighbors, mentors, family members.
The people who show up when we need them most.
The Women Who Refused to Back Down
One thing I've always admired about The Chicks is that they built a career around being unapologetically strong.
They weren't afraid to speak their minds. They weren't afraid to challenge expectations. And they weren't afraid to stand firm in who they were.
That strength comes through in "Goodbye Earl."
Beneath the humor is a story about refusing to accept abuse as normal. And that message continues to resonate with many survivors.
Music and Memory
It's funny how music can transport us.
The moment I hear this song, I'm reminded of those country stations playing through the speakers.
Long car rides.
Growing up in Vermont.
Being a teenager trying to make sense of a complicated world.
Music has a way of preserving moments in time.
And sometimes those moments carry lessons we don't fully understand until years later.
What This Anthem Means to Me
For me, this anthem represents two things:
Justice.
And friendship.
The belief that abuse should never be ignored.
And the belief that none of us should have to face difficult things completely alone.
Because sometimes the people who help us survive are the people who remind us we're worth fighting for.

Thank you for telling stories about resilience, friendship, and strength.
And thank you for creating a song that gave one young survivor hope that someday justice and safety were possible.
